Frequently Asked Questions

What do you sell?

We provide live animals to the processor of your choice. We sell quarter, half, and full critters, depending on timing and availability.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the beef is based on live animal weight or hanging weight per pound, paid to JR Farms, Inc. The cost per pound varies based on breed (Angus or Wayngus) and seasonality. You will also pay a processing fee to the locker directly. Average estimates are generally $225 per quarter for processing fees.

How/Where can I get the animal processed?

We will deliver to any local locker. Here are two reputable facilities we have worked with and recommend:

Jack’s Cold Storage - Madison Locker

Renner Corner Meats

How much beef can I expect?

For a standard quarter, check out this image from the University of Minnesota extension. Click here.

How much freezer space do I need?

A quarter of beef will fit in a 5-7 cu. ft. freezer. The rule of thumb is one cubic foot of freezer space for every 35 – 40 pounds of packaged meat.

What is hanging weight?

The hanging weight is the weight of the animal before it has been cut into your steaks, roasts, and ground beef. Your take home weight will be approximately 60-65% of the hanging weight.
